I
(Pierre) am sitting at my computer, it is Sunday the 31st of August and
it is late morning. Catharine is still sound asleep in the bedroom, so I
will try to be as quiet as I can.
Catharine is still in bed because of
the last two tiring days that we spent in Quebec City with a couple of
the subs of the stable.....and the film crew from Kink!
Are you curious now?
Well, let me tell you about the last
3 months of our lives, the last weekend being just one episode of this
adventure.....
Last April, we received an email from
a researcher who was working for a television show. She wanted to know
if we would be interested in being on a television show to talk about
our lifestyle. The exchange of emails led to a meeting in a restaurant
where she described what the producers of that show were looking for and
what it would mean to be involved in this show. From that meeting, we
had another meeting a couple of weeks later with the producers of the
show.
During this meeting they explained exactly
what to expect and not to expect from them. At the same time, we did some
negotiation about some of our limits.. what we were ready to do on TV.
One of the things they emphasized again, was how this show needed us to
be involved in it and how much time it would require from us. When they
explained to us how much time and it was going to take to be involved,
it was hard to believe them. Now we are almost at the end of the shooting,
I must admit that they were right!
Long discussions with the subs of the
stable followed that meeting. Even between Myself and Catharine / katy
my partner, we discussed about this at length. Finally, after we came
to an agreement with the subs from the stable. Some of the limits discussed
were simple; for some, no showing of genitalia, others wanted to wear
masks during the shooting or not have their faces filmed. Some subs of
the stable didn't want at all to be part of this for personal reasons.
Catharine and I, as the submissives' Dominants, considered it was our
job and duty to make sure that the film crew would respect these limits.
In the beginning of June, a last meeting
with the producer of Kink. During that meeting, we met the two directors
of the show. Most importantly we were introduced to the director who would
take care of us....Aerlyn!
Before I talk more about Aerlyn, let
me tell you a bit about Paperny Films production.
Paperny Films belongs to ...... Mr.
David Paperny. We had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman during a
party organized by the producer. We were impressed by him and how warm
and nice he was! Paperny Films specializes in doing documentaries. Often,
on TV, you will see a brief biography of a famous person, and at the end,
you will see the logo of Paperny Films. Yes, this is the same production
house! Paperny Films is located in Vancouver but it does not stop them
from filming all over Canada. For the information of our readers outside
of Canada, Paperny Films is the producer of a series on the "Showcase"
channel. This series is about many different alternative lifestyles or
kinks of people. The name of the series is....."Kink". The first
year of Kink (2001) was shot in Vancouver. The second year(2002), was
shot in Toronto and this year (2003) Kink III has been shot in Montreal.
When we met with the producer of Kink,
to show us exactly what Kink was all about, they sent us all the episodes
of the first year and about half of the second year (only up to then because,
at that time, the episodes of the second year where not all shown...)
When we viewed the episodes, we were impressed with the care that was
taken to ensure that the people being filmed on Kink could tell their
stories and that the filming and editing was as transparent as possible.
We witnessed the same care when we were being filmed! We must admit, the
viewing of the VHS was very important in our decision to do the show.
To be honest, Kink were their own best salesperson with the VHS.
From the viewng of the VHS, we learned
quickly that WE would be the ones who would make us look good....or not!
After a good discussion with someone who gave us a couple of good points
of advice we finally gave the Kink people our thumb ups!
The second time we met the people of
Kink was during a supper at a hip pizza place in Montreal. We met again
with the producer (Stacey) and we met for the first time with the two
directors; Ziad and Aerlyn.
During that supper, we didn't know who
would be the director in charge of us, or if both would be doing the filming
with us. We started a discussion about the requirements of doing such
a project with them, discussions that would go all summer, making us discover
the realities of having a camera in our lives.
Ziad, a very nice gentleman, late twenties,
with a "hip" looks. He is trilingual, soft spoken, laid back
and Catharine says he has sparkling eyes! We learned that he had produced
an alternative movie called "Saved by the Belles". This movie
shows Montreal's alternative/gay scene with actors from the scene of Montreal.
After meeting the directors, Catharine
and I arrived at the conclusion that we would probably have Aerlyn dealing
with us. Ziad is fully trilingual and some of the subjects filmed during
the summer were unilingual French. Aerlyn has a bit of French, but I don't
think it was enough to handle the French subjects. Yet, we think that
Aerlyn also chose us as her subjects. The fact that she has seniority
in the production company gives her that choice....or maybe we are just
conceited and the choice of director for us was made by the director for
others reasons!
Aerlyn:(the lady with the big big grin)
Yes, we think that she deserved a whole
chapter. Why? Because she will be very important in all the decisions made
about us during the shooting.
Aerlyn, whose name I would pronounce
as "Arleen" all summer because of my French accent, (it is properly
pronounced "air-lynne" by-the-way,). Aeryln was so easy going
that she patiently accepted her new name Arleen. She is a very difficult
woman to describe; incredibly charismatic, fortyish, 5' 6 inches short
hair, glasses, boyish look. She does not hide being gay, but she's not
"in your face" either. Very patient, soft spoken yet, very "bossy".
I will always remember her with this mental picture of her, a large smile
on her face, her thumbs up, always cheering us after a shoot....even if
we made the most stupid mistakes and she had to redo everything again
because of us.
I have learned, during the summer,
that Aerlyn has won a couple of major awards for her work. I am not surprised
at all, she is always taking care of all the small details, looks, sounds,
the way we were represented by the camera. After a couple of shoots, Catharine
and I simply gave her our trust, because, she was able to make us feel
comfortable, even with a film crew of 4 watching us doing some pretty
personal stuff! We know that Aerlyn gave us the best opportunities to
look very good....or very bad! Let's cross our fingers that we will not
look stupid after the editing!
Next!
